Itinerary
DAY ONE
Arrive at your accommodation, settle in and explore the local area or take in a walk if time permits.
DAY TWO - Upwey to Abbotsbury
7.5 miles - Easy
An easy(ish) start to your week, walking the South Dorset Ridgeway with its fascinating neolithic long barrows and burial mounds. This area has a higher concentration of them anywhere other than Stonehenge itself. All with magnificent views of the coast as you go.
DAY THREE - Corfe Castle to Lulworth
10 miles - Easy
You start the day at Corfe Castle where you can explore the ruins of the castle itself before setting off on a glorious ridgeway walk, high above the coast with magnificent views all the way. You end the day at busy Lulworth Cove with its pretty horseshoe bay.
DAY FOUR Stonebarrow to Bridport
8 miles - Easy or Strenuous
Starting above the West Dorset coast at Stonebarrow, this walk visits the ruined church of St. Gabriel before climbing to Golden Cap, the highest point on the South Coast which involves a stiff climb. If you prefer an easier day, you could just skirt around the bottom of the hill but you would be missing some magnificent views. You then drop down to Seatown where you will find the excellent Anchor Inn and a popular beach before heading inland to wander the deep and atmospheric holloway of Hell Lane with its mysterious carvings. Then, if you have the energy, you can climb up onto iconic Colmer's Hill before dropping down into Symondsbury to find a cup of tea or a pint of beer before your last stretch into Bridport.
DAY FIVE - Portland circular
10 miles - Easy - Shorter option of 7 miles
Today we are going on a walk around the island of Portland. Attached to the mainland by just a causeway of shingle (the famous Chesil Bank), this island has an atmosphere all of its own. You will have the opportunity to spot migratory birds, wander the abandoned quarries, visit the interesting little museum and Portland Bill lighthouse and explore an unusual sculpture park along the way.
DAY SIX - Studland to Wareham
11.5 miles - Easy - Shorter option of 6.5 miles
Back to the Purbecks today for a fairly long but leisurely walk exploring the Purbeck Heath National Nature Reserve - the only place which is home to all five native species of reptile. Visit the strange Agglestone which, legend has it, landed there when the devil tried to throw it at Corfe Castle from the Isle of Wight but falling rather short. The walk finishes in the ancient, Saxon town of Wareham.
DAY SEVEN - Tyneham to Osmington
11.5 miles - Strenuous - Shorter option of 6.5 miles
And so to the grand finale! A day walking the magnificent Jurassic Coast. We've left this to last so that you have got your walking legs prepared for some serious ups and downs. This walk takes in the iconic Durdle Door and Lulworth Cove, visiting the deserted village of Tyneham and lovely Ringstead Bay, where you can go for a dip from the pebble beach if you come prepared. You end your walk with a celebratory drink at the famous Smugglers Inn.
DAY EIGHT
Time to say goodbye to Dorset and head home. We're sure you will be back!
