Dorset is so much more than its Jurassic Coast. Inland you will find some of the most beautiful walking in the country with its high chalk downlands rich with butterflies and wild flowers and criss-crossed with ancient ridgeway tracks, its lush river valleys where dairy herds still graze as they did in Hardy's time, ancient broad-leaf woodland and beautiful nature reserves, rich with wildlife. This weekend takes in the best of them and you will be staying in a cosy inn with excellent food in a picturesque village.

Itinerary
DAY ONE Arrive at your accommodation and settle in. DAY TWO - Lower Kingcombe to Askerswell 9 miles - Easy A day spent exploring West Dorset's quiet valleys. You start today's walk with a meander around Lower Kingcombe nature reserve, home to rare butterflies and flowers before heading off through some of the quietest countryside in the county, passing through another nature reserve on the way. You then walk beneath the mighty ramparts of Eggardon Hill to finish your day at the excellent Spyway Inn. DAY THREE - Milton Abbas to Plush 12.5 miles - Moderate - Shorter option of 9 miles Today you will visit Dorset's second highest hill to take an easy ridgeway walk down to the model village of Milton Abbas, built to replace the original village which was ruining Lord Milton's view. Wander down the street of identical thatched cottages and visit the beautiful abbey which survived Henry VIII's dissolution of the monastries. You will then pass by one of the most beautiful manor houses in Dorset with its own small chapel before climbing to pass through the secretive Dorset Gap, a meeting of ancient tracks hidden away in the hills. From here you have a magnificent ridgeway walk before dropping down to the pretty hamlet of Plush and the multi-award-winning Brace of Pheasants. DAY FOUR - Sydling St. Nicholas to Cerne Abbas 7.5 miles - Easy - Option to extend to 10 miles A shorter walk today passing through one of the most peaceful valleys in the county before a short sharp climb to meet The Wessex Ridgeway. You then descend again to arrive at the feet of the Cerne Giant before transferring to your car or the station to head off home. Or you could book an additional night's accommodation for a relaxed end to your break.
