Cerne Abbas sits right at the heart of County in a peaceful valley set amongst the chalk downlands of central Dorset. Here you will find 'The Rude Man of Cerne', a 180m high chalk figure carved into the hillside, now understood to be at least Saxon in origin and possibly even older. He once overlooked a mighty abbey, the sister to the one at Sherborne and almost identical in its day. However, the abbey is now almost completely disappeared, although some of its spiritual atmosphere remains in this special village. Explore the surrounding area with gentle walks which are self-guided as standard but can be guided by arrangement - just talk to one of our friendly team to ask about availability.

Itinerary
DAY ONE 1.5 miles - Very easy Arrive at your accommodation (transfers from Dorchester or Sherborne stations included) and settle in before heading out for a self-guided tour of Cerne Abbas. Take a walk up Abbey Street, lined with Tudor buildings and with some good, original examples to reach the remains of the abbey. Visit The Silver Well, renowned for its healing properties and steeped in local folklore before heading back for a pre-dinner drink at one of the villages three pubs or maybe stretch your legs with a short walk over to the brewery tap room. DAY TWO 7.5 miles - Easy Start today by walking to The Giant viewing point to see the Cerne Giant before setting off to walk a high ridgeway and one of the most peaceful valleys in Dorset, finally arriving in the pretty village of Sydling St. Nicholas for a reviving drink at The Greyhound Inn. DAY THREE 6 miles - Easy Today you are off on a six mile circular walk from the village, starting by walking under the feet of the giant before climbing up onto Giant Hill. From here you drop down to the ancient village of Minterne Magna with the option to explore the gardens at Minterne House - 27 acres of woodland with a famous collection of rhododendrons and azaleas. On then to the peaceful hamlet of Upcerne before strolling back down the valley to Cerne Abbas and a well-deserved supper. DAY FOUR Head home after a leisurely breakfast. Transfers to local stations included.
