Through the late autumn and winter months, as nights draw in and daylight wanes, life slows to a more measured pace.  Wintry walks over hills and along deserted beaches, ending with a warm fire in a cosy inn are there to enjoy and there are events, especially around Christmas, when communities come together to celebrate the winter solstice and Yuletide.

February is when the first herald of spring, swathes of snowdrops, carpet gardens and parks throughout the county. Minterne, Forde Abbey, and Kingston Lacy all showing off their white carpets.

Poole Harbour Winter Safari Cruises

In winter, Poole Harbour is an important haven for over 25,000 waders and waterfowl, finding refuge during the harshest months of the year. Divers, grebes, scarce sea duck and waders congregate in the sheltered bays and estuaries, while raptors take advantage of their numbers. Regular trips from Poole Harbour go in search of the "Big Five" (White-tailed Eagle, Marsh Harrier, Peregrine, Hen Harrier and Goshawk) and offer a brilliant opportunity to encounter and familiarise yourself a wide range of our winter visitors.

On Boxing Day every year, Wessex Morris come to Cerne Abbas to present their annual Mummers' Play. Expect silliness, murder and mayhem as King George vanquishes his foes and the Good Doctor resurrects the full cast for a happy ending. Follow them to the pub for a pint of local beer and a round of English folk songs.
